Eco-Garden
“QEGS pupils go wild…
Twenty Five students in Y7-12 at Queen Elizabeth’s, Alford, came into school on Saturday 31 March to help plant the school’s new Eco-garden. The garden has been set up to serve three purposes: to provide a quiet space for sixth form pupils to relax in, to provide the students with experience of growing and experimenting with bio fuel crops, and to give students the opportunity to grow their own food. This year’s crops include pumpkins, potatoes and strawberries in the vegetable garden; willow, miscanthus rhizomes and oil seed rape in the biofuels garden, and dessert apples, cooking apples and pears in the orchard. There is even a 200 sq metre hay meadow and wildlife garden. The project has been supported by a number of local businesses including; Boston Seeds, Galley Hill Farm, Nuvar, Friskney Biofuels Partnership, Tothby Manor Farm, Hubbard Seeds and Bashfarms Ltd. The school would like to thank all of the supporters of this venture and hope to have some further good news this year as they go for the Eco schools silver award.”
“Things are popping up in the Eco-garden…
Work in the Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar school Eco-garden is progressing well. Despite the group of dedicated students having to battle with a very windy site, a very dry April, a very wet May and the hungriest slugs on the planet; the orchard, vegetable patch and meadow are springing into life. The following photos show the vegetable garden and the meadow

the orchard
,
some meadow flowers
,
apples beginning to develop
and the broad beans coming into flower. The vegetable patch has also already supplied the Y13 leaving BBQ with all their green salad leaves.”
